Why you should do those physical adventures before it’s too late.
The podcast about this topic just went LIVE (one-day early-scheduling mishap), but surprise for you! If you want to listen to it, you can go here or wherever you listen to your podcasts. While there, please give us a follow/subscribe AND a review, as it helps push us to a larger audience. Thank you. We have enjoyed making the podcast thus far and have so many powerful topics down the pipeline. Yippie!
We are going to attempt to thru-hike the APPALACHIAN TRAIL!
This is huge! Some think it is our biggest adventure yet, more significant than crossing an ocean with only a year of sailing experience under our belts. What do you think? Is sleeping in the woods, cooking over an open fire and fighting off bears that major?
Why? Time is fleeting; we are not getting any younger. Plus, Largo only has a few years left with us before he launches. This is one of the reasons we are only hosting 2 group trips in 2024; we can’t get this time back with him, and we plan to soak it all up. We know you want more trips (thank you), and in 2025, we will add eight trips. Registration will open next week. We have one other reason we are hiking, but it is pretty personal, and I am not sure if we will ever share, but who knows?
Who? Largo and I (Jessica) will do the entire trial. Will will join us on weekends, vacations, and other random days. He will be staying in Airbnbs along the way and meeting up with us whenever possible, with Sentry of course.
When? We will start at the end of March and finish by the end of September. Earlier would be ideal, but we must see how it goes. We will get off the trail for three weeks in May so that Largo can take his AP exams in California. I hope we don’t get soft during that time. Bagels are my weakness.
Where? The AT runs from Georgia to Maine or vice versa. We will be hiking northbound (aka NOBO). 2,197.4 miles
How? Using our legs, sleeping in the wild in tents, and cooking on a camp stove, we will sleep in beds on our zero days (days that we don’t hike) and when we meet with Will.
We will definitely be sharing more details as they unfold. This was a very, VERY spontaneous decision. To give you an idea, most people know they will hike it a year or two (or more) in advance. We decided on Dec 4th, 3 -3.5 months before we will start. Last-minute planning can be done, but we are still very much in hyper-focus, hyper-plan, and hyper-exercise mode right now. Largo has to get ahead in school and me in work (newsletter, podcasts, opening our 2025 group trip registrations, etc.). We will make it, but it will surely be a rush to the finish line. I think we really don’t know how to operate any other way.
We will also attempt to vlog it every day like we did the Camino. It feels fascinating to document the entire journey of an adventure that is so profound, lengthy, and just plain tough. I wish we could carry our own little documentary film crew, but that is beyond our budget. Are there any filmmakers who want to turn this into a documentary and hike for six months with us?
Biggest Fears
Bears, not being able to complete it (although that is not why we are doing it; it would feel good to finish), the cold (I (Jessica) hate being cold), hmmm, a couple more, but I am doing my best to walk with the fear. My biggest fear is something I am not prepared to share right now, but know that there is a lot at stake with this hike.
Fear is a natural human emotion, and everyone experiences it in their lifetime, so we are not intent on denying it but instead on using it to deepen the experience. This is the sentence I say in my head when I think about a bear ripping me to shreds. Wink.
Not a fear, but we are really going to miss Will. I don’t do adventures without him, and although I can, I don’t like to; he is fun and my adventure buddy.
Ok, keeping it short this week as I want to get this out with the podcast. You must have questions. Could you drop them in the comments? I am excited to hear your response, advice, thoughts, etc. This is huge for us, and we hope you are as excited as we are.
xoxo

Awesome! You’ll be passing right by me in the Great Smoky Mountains! I’ll need to bring you a care package! Haha. Our black bears aren’t so bad! You’ll do great!
This is so exciting and inspiring too!! I've loved your recent content on losing your why by the way, it came at a moment when we were questioning whether we'd gone a little off course too! The end result being that Mark has taken a couple of days out to walk two days of the Camino (Mozarabe, from Granada towards Cordoba) to think and reset, while I keep the home fire burning at home. I think we too, might be back out there again soon, having fallen back into some of our more sedentary habits. Thank you for being you, and blazing a trail for others! x
