They can do hard things!
I had a choice. Go watch Avalon in a musical at Carnegie Mellon University or help her pack up her dorm. It was not in the cards to do both financially. It was an easy choice. I chose the musical. Was that selfish? Some may say yes, but I like to think of it as strategic. I don’t believe helping her pack up her dorm room helps her in the long run. She can do hard things!
Ever since our kids turned 14 we have had a policy in our home that they are “practicing adults” under our finances and roof. This is the space for them to make all the mistakes that they will not spend a lifetime paying for in dollars, regret, and consequences. It is a safe space for adulting. Along the way, this has meant a lot of “you are on your own” with one eye watching just in case. I will be the first to admit this does not come naturally for me as I want to help, but I know standing aside is the best for them as humans to gain confidence in life stuff.
